The right rug can completely change the look and feel of a room. As well as adding colour, pattern and texture, a well-positioned rug helps define the space and brings your furniture together.
But where should your rug sit? Should the sofa be on it or off it? How far should a rug extend beyond a dining table? And where should you position a rug underneath a bed?
Our simple rug placement guide will help you get it right.
In a living room, your rug should help anchor the seating area, rather than look like a separate island in the middle of the floor.
For larger living rooms and open-plan spaces, choose a rug large enough for the sofa, chairs and coffee table to sit comfortably on it.
This creates a generous, cohesive seating area and works particularly well when furniture is positioned away from the walls.
Good sizes to consider: 240 × 340cm or 280 × 360cm.

One of the easiest and most versatile arrangements is to position the rug underneath the front legs of your sofa and chairs.
This visually connects the furniture while still allowing some of the flooring to remain visible around the room.
Good sizes to consider: 160 × 230cm or 200 × 300cm.

In a smaller room, a rug can sit in the centre of the seating area with the furniture positioned around it.
Try to keep the spacing between the rug and surrounding furniture reasonably consistent so that the arrangement looks deliberate rather than disconnected.
Good sizes to consider: 120 × 170cm or 160 × 230cm.

A dining room rug should be large enough for both the table and chairs.
Most importantly, the chairs should remain on the rug when they are pulled away from the table. A rug that finishes immediately behind the chairs can catch their legs and make the dining area look cramped.
As a general guide, choose a rug that extends at least 60cm beyond each side of your dining table.
The same principle applies to rectangular, square and round dining tables.

A rug in the bedroom adds warmth and softness while helping to frame the bed.
For a luxurious look, position a large rug underneath the bed so that it extends generously beyond both sides and the foot.
Alternatively, position the rug beneath the lower two-thirds of the bed. This gives you plenty of soft rug underfoot when getting in and out of bed without requiring such a large rug.
For smaller bedrooms, runners placed on either side of the bed can also work beautifully.

Round rugs are ideal for creating a focal point and softening rooms dominated by straight lines.
Try a round rug underneath a round dining table, beneath a small occasional table, in a reading corner or as a feature in an entrance hall.
Allow enough rug to remain visible around the furniture so that its shape can be appreciated.

A runner can add warmth and interest to a hallway while protecting flooring in one of the busiest areas of the home.
Choose a runner that leaves a visible border of flooring on either side rather than filling the hallway from wall to wall.
For longer hallways, make sure the runner feels deliberately positioned within the space rather than pushed against one end.

Before ordering your rug, mark out its dimensions on the floor using masking tape. This is an easy way to see how much of the room the rug will cover and where your furniture will sit in relation to it.
And if you're choosing between two sizes, going larger will often create a more balanced result. A rug that's too small can make furniture look disconnected, while a generously sized rug helps bring the whole room together.
